Distortion from Prime on iPad via iConnect 4

Dear LoopCommunity...We've just recently started to run both downloaded and uploaded tracks using the Prime app, and absolutely LOVE the features and the simplicity of use. However, we have had the need to restart the app during our Sunday service to eliminate severe distortion along with the click/cue suddenly appearing over channels 1 and 2. Everything worked just fine during 2 separate rehearsals (Thursday evening and Sunday morning), but when it came time to start our 1st service, we encountered the above mentioned issues. These were remedied fairly quickly (but with our congregation watching) by closing and restarting the Prime app, after which everything worked as it did during our rehearsals. Out of caution, we decided to run the tracks again before the start of the 2nd service, and again the tracks were distorted with click/cue over channel 1 and 2. This time we did a full reboot of the iPad (e.g. back to the Apple logo), which required that we reset the output channels for click/cue for all tracks in the set before using Prime. Both times the fix was done on the iPad alone, without touching the iConnect interface or anything further downstream in the signal path. Is this a known (or previously reported) issue? If so, is there a fix? We'd really like to avoid moving to a more complicated (and expensive) solution if possible, but we also need to be confident in what we're doing. We're running an iPad pro (model # MLMW2LL/A), iOS 10.2, 122.07 GB capacity (w/ 116.09 available), to our FOH system via an iConnect 4 (with breakout cable) and 3 Radial DIs (stereo tracks over channels 1-2, and click/cues on channel 3). Thanks in advance for any feedback you might have!

Hey Gina,

We're looking into this now. Is there any other devices that you can test with the iconnectivity to see if you can replicate it?

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 - 5:20pm

Thanks Janson - We can try another iPad, although it won't be the same spec (older/slower/less memory). Since the distortion issue is intermittent, it'll be difficult to tell if we've really resolved it until it happens again (or not)...but we can give it a go.

One thing I forgot to mention in my initial post was that we had used the Prime app with the exact same physical configuration on the previous 2 weekends (and related rehearsals) without incident. The only thing new this past weekend was the inclusion of a custom track that we uploaded (3 stereo synth parts, a click and vocal cues), for which the stems were exported from Logic as WAV files. Could our custom track have somehow corrupted the Prime app environment?

Hm...if your upload went through correctly it shouldn't have been an issue. The only issue would've been the audio stems' quality. Do you know if those uploaded stems were recorded at least at 44.1 and 16-bit rates? Did you also play those back from your computer before uploading to test the individual stems themselves? Isolating this issue is the key, but it could be a PRIME compatibility issue with iConnect.

Thanks again Janson - The custom stems were exported as WAV files from Logic Pro X at 44.1 and 24-bit rates, they played fine before upload, and they worked just fine in rehearsal, and after the relaunch of the LC Prime app. I wasn't the one who purchased the loop equipment, but I believe the iConnectAUDIO4+ interface was purchased (along with the Looptimus foot pedal) based on your YouTube video entitled PRIME Multi-Out using iConnectAUDIO4+. We're running it exactly as mentioned in Matt McCoy's demo.

Hi Gina -
Can you tell us the name of the Custom Track that is distorting? We want to test that specific song on our hardware.

Thursday, March 23, 2017 - 12:18pm

The downloaded tracks were distorting as well...in fact, our custom track for One Thing Remains - D was the last in a set of 3 songs, with purchased/downloaded songs being fired first. Everything was working just fine during our rehearsal (which ended only 30-minutes prior to service, during which time the Prime app was open, but dormant). Then, when we launched our first track (one that had been downloaded from LoopCommunity) it was distorted...and we remedied the situation by double-clicking the home button on the iPad and swiping the Prime app up to close it. When we reopened the Prime app, everything worked just fine until just before our second service when the distortion reappeared (after the app had again been sitting dormant for about 90 minutes). My question regarding having a custom track in the set was really more to do with if/how the Prime app handles uploaded content differently, and if perhaps other (less used) branches of your application code were now active as a result. Thanks again for your rapid replies.

I have a similar situation that to me seems to be more of an issue with the iConnectAUDIO4+. I've not used Prime with it yet (the iConnectAUDIO4+) however, when using both Korg Gadget and Propellerhead's Thor for extended periods of time (30-90mins) I often have to restart the instrument app because the audio becomes distorted. Usually starting of lightly distorted and then increasing to full blown nasty. I've checked to make sure that I have the latest firmware on the iConnectAUDIO4+ (and I do). It doesn't happen every time but more often than not. I'm new to the iConnectAUDIO4+ and wonder if there is a setting that needs adjustment. Sorry I'm unable to provide help but I'm grateful for your post.

Hey there,
Uploaded content shouldn't be any different than purchased content. I think the issue lies within the iConnect when it has been dormant for a period of time. We're looking into this, but unfortunately, there may not be much that we can do. It might be on iConnects side of things.

Thanks for the info Kevin! Sorry to hear that you're experiencing the same distortion issue with your iConnectAUDIO4+. It seems that the issue is indeed with the iConnectAUDIO4+ after all. See their FAQ thread at the following URL: https://www.iconnectivity.com/faqs-blog/2017/2/10/distortion-issues-when... . Apparently the problem is with iOS not being compliant with their published spec (according to the info on the iConnect site), and occurs whenever more than 2 output channels are used via their USB to Lightning Cable. Distortion gradually builds, and the app relaunch resolves the issue. They didn't say whether or not multi-channel (more than 2) was able to be accomplished using the Camera Connection cable, or whether that would eliminate the distortion (which builds gradually over time). Do you happen to know if multi-channel operation is available via the Camera Connection cable?

Friday, March 24, 2017 - 7:54am

Hi Gina, I'll have to test that out today. I do have the camera cable so I'll see what I can get it to do in the next couple of hours here.

Thanks Kevin! For now, we'll continue recycling the Prime app just prior to service to see if we can avoid the eventual distortion from the iConnect. Alternatively, we could just run the stems in mono using the hard right/left panning of stems/click & cues, but we've experienced noticeable phase cancellation in the stereo tracks when trying that approach in the past. We're also looking into buying/using Ableton for backing tracks, but we're a bit concerned about the learning curve since we have a number of busy folks who will all need to come up to speed quickly at the point we decide to make the change (and we'll need to re-download the stem versions of our songs). Thanks again to all who have replied...MUCH appreciated!!! I hope this has been informative to those who may have been dealing with the same issue.

Hey Gina,

There was also a comment from on of our users that mentioned make sure that the iConnectivity's iConfig Audio app was set to sync the to the iPad and not the iConnectivity itself. He mentioned that he had not had anymore distortion issues since. You can try that to see if there's any luck or even ask the iConnectivity support team about this feature from their app. =)

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 - 8:54pm

Thanks Janson...we'll give that sync setting a try. I also received a PM from someone who indicated that the new Apple iOS update was rumored to fix this issue, so we have a couple of change to try (separately, of course). Thanks again to all for your input...this is a GREAT user forum!

Let us know what you find out! That would be great if it's fixed! =)

Thursday, April 6, 2017 - 1:49pm

Hey Jason, quick question. We are looking at using Ableton instead of the PRIME app for Good Friday & Easter, and if it is less glitchy, switching over completely. Is it possible to upgrade from the PRIME tracks to the MAC compatible tracks? It would be helpful if we didn't have to repurchase everything at full retail. Thanks!

Hey Gina, I definitely don't like hearing that PRIME is "glitchy". Can you tell me what issues you've been running into? I want to make sure we fix them.

Hey Gina,

We charge a $2.00/track processing fee to upgrade from an App Track to the MultiTrack product. So, you'd receive a coupon for the amount you already paid for the App Tracks minus the processing fee per track, then you'd pay the remaining balance for all MultiTracks purchased. If you'd like to do this, send us an email to support@loopcommunity.com and we'll help you out. =)

Awesome! Thank you so much!

Hi Janson,

I sent an email to support@loopcommunity.com regarding your suggestion on April 6th, for upgrading from App Tracks to Multi Tracks. I haven't heard back and I need to upgrade at least one song before This weekend. Can I go ahead and purchase the Multi Tracks and get a refund later? Or are you able to send me the coupon code or whatever I need to get the credit for what I already paid?

Thank you for your time!
Gina

We're working on fixing some of these bugs, as well as adding new features to PRIME. It would be helpful if some of you would beta test the changes for us.
If you're able to help, send us an email to primebeta@loopcommunity.com with your LC username!
