There was just one problem: nobody could say their name. Now, founders Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan, the songwriting duo behind some of the most-sung worship anthems of the last decade, including Goodness of God, What A Beautiful Name, Who You Say I Am and Cornerstone, are doing something rare in the music industry: admitting they got it wrong. “We realised the name had meaning to us, but was creating confusion for the very people we’re trying to serve,” the pair said. Effective immediately, the group will be known as COMMONS WORSHIP. So What Did CXMMXNS Actually Mean? The name wasn’t random, it was deeply theological. The “X” is the Greek letter chi, the first letter of Christos, Christ, and has been used as a shorthand for Jesus since the early church. Written out, CXMMXNS was a declaration that we have Christ in common. “Christians everywhere, across every culture and language, can agree on the centrality of Jesus in our faith and in our worship,” they explained. “But we realised the name itself wasn’t living out that same value of accessibility and clarity.” The old name won’t disappear entirely, CXMMXNS will still feature on album artwork and in creative contexts, but the official, searchable, sayable name is now COMMONS WORSHIP. Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan have spent decades writing songs sung by millions of people in hundreds of languages. Accessibility isn’t just a brand value for them, it’s their entire mission. “Our hope is that COMMONS WORSHIP will be easier to find, easier to talk about, and make it clearer what we’re most passionate about.” The rebrand rolls out across all social media accounts and digital streaming platforms immediately. Existing followers don’t need to do a thing, except now they will hopefully find it easier to ask Siri to play their favourite COMMONS WORSHIP song.
